How to Move a Swing Set

How to Move a Swing Set

A swing set is the heart of backyard fun, a place where countless memories are made. Sometimes that fun needs a new home, whether you're moving, updating your backyard, or looking for a better space for play. Relocating a swing set can feel like a big task, but a little preparation keeps the good times going.

Let's walk through how to move your swing set safely so the adventures can continue in its new location.

Prepare Your Swing Set and New Space for the Move

Before you get started, a bit of prep work will make the moving process much easier.

  • Inspect everything: Give your playset a thorough once-over. Check for any loose bolts, worn-out components, or splintered wood. This is an ideal time to identify any parts that may need replacement.

  • Remove what you can: Make the structure lighter and less awkward to handle by removing all detachable accessories, such as swings, trapeze bars, and ropes.

  • Clean it up: Give your playset a good cleaning to remove dirt, leaves, and any other debris. It’s much nicer to work with a clean set.

  • Choose a safe new location: Make sure your new swing set spot has a level surface and plenty of clearance around the set. Per ASTM guidelines, that means at least six feet in every direction. You don’t want to move the set only to find that the ground is uneven or unsafe for play. Other considerations:

    • The site must have good drainage and not collect water.

    • The area should be free of rocks, stumps, tall grass, trees, and other protrusions.

    • Make sure your new site does not interfere with sprinkler systems or underground utilities.

    • If applicable, ensure that you have any Homeowners Association approval that may be required.

How to Move a Swing Set Safely

As always, safety is the top priority. Gorilla Playsets come in various sizes, ranging from smaller designs to sprawling activity centers, so choose the moving method that fits your needs.

Moving Without Taking It Apart

You might be able to move some smaller swing sets, in one piece. This method is best for sets that can be safely lifted and carried by a group of helpers.

If your playset is light enough, gather a few strong friends and use teamwork to lift and carry it to its new spot. Be sure to lift with your legs, not your back, and communicate clearly to coordinate your movements.

Disassembling and Transporting Larger Sets

For bigger structures, like many of our popular medium swing sets and large swing sets, disassembly is the safest route.

  • Take photos: Before you unscrew a single bolt, take pictures from every angle. This will be an invaluable guide when it's time to put it all back together.

  • Follow instructions in reverse: If you still have the assembly manual, follow the steps in reverse order. If you don’t, work logically, removing smaller components before tackling the main frame. You can find many assembly manuals here.

  • Label everything: Place screws, bolts, and brackets in labeled bags for each section. This will save you from a major headache during reassembly.

Reinstalling and Anchoring Your Swing Set

Once you've moved the playset to its new home, it’s time to set it up for more years of fun.

  • Reassemble carefully: Using your photos and labeled parts, reassemble the swing set. Double-check that every bolt is tight and all components are securely in place.

  • Anchor it down: Anchoring the playset to the ground is crucial for stability and safety. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure it’s firmly secured.

  • Install protective surfacing. Reinstall shock-absorbing surface materials such as rubber mulch or engineered wood fiber.

Hello; I have picked up a previously owned Gorilla set for my grandchildren. It was quite large and took some dissassembly to move but all parts were still in great shape and made the move without damage. I can surely figure out how to reassemble, but it would be a great help if I had the original assmbly instructions. Do you folks have a online or other methd for obtaining such. I can send you the particular model No if needed. Thanks; Fred Rose
